Patient Care Assistant (HSC/HS 5) (2 Post)

Under the direction and supervision of the Assistant Matron, the Patient Care Assistant, assists with the provision of quality care to the residents of the institution/infirmary by providing personal, physical and health care by ensuring that their surrounding is clean and comfortable and by being a source of professional companionship, providing emotional support that will enhance the healthy well-being of the residents.

Qualifications: 
  • Completion of Secondary Education.
  • Training/Certification in provision of assistive aide (eg Geriatric Care/Nursing).
  • Certificate in CPR/First Aide
  • Two years’ experience in the field.
Responsibilities: 
  • Assists clients who need help with mobility and positioning, including lifting.
  • Aid residents with transfers to and from beds, chairs, and wheelchairs, following safe lifting practices.
  • Assist residents with personal care activities, such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting.
  • Support residents with personal hygiene routines, including teeth brushing, hair combing, and nail trimming.
  • Assist with the care of medical equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, and other assistive devices.
  • Be vigilant in observing behaviour or other changes and communicates promptly to the nurse/doctor or Assistant Matron;
  • Assist residents to communicate dietary restrictions and needs.
  • Prepare residents for meals, assist with feeding as required, and encourage adequate hydration and nutrition intake.
  • Handle and dispose of biohazardous waste according to facility policies, ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
  • Observe and report any safety hazards or concerns in residents' living areas, adhering to infection control protocols.
  • Ensure bed linens, quarters and rooms are sanitized and tidied for resident.
  • Assists residents in maintaining their personal items;
  • Assists with occupational therapy activities;
  • Provides companionship to residents by communicating, reading, playing games or any other form of activity that will enhance their emotional well-being;
  • Provides constant supervision and maintenance of residents who are incontinent to ensure that their needs are adequately met;
  • Accompanies residents to keep appointment at hospitals or any other health care institutions;
  • Assists by following the established procedures for dealing with bodies of resident who have died;
  • Ensures that all residents are closely monitored to assess their immediate needs and takes the necessary action;
  • Assists the medical/nursing staff as requested;
  • Reports to Assistant Matron or Matron any incident on matter concerning residents which requires the intervention.
  • Requests of matron/assistant matron items of care for residents (eg, adult diapers.
  • Participates in meetings;
  • Assists with end of life activities (where residents decease in residence).
  • Confirms to the rules, regulations and guidance of the institution so that the mission and policies of the infirmary can be achieved.
  • Prepares incident and other minor reports.
